# Create an Approval Request for SMS

> Create and submit approval requests for SMS External Templates by selecting approvers, configuring approval settings, and managing DLT submission preferences.

Approval requests let your team review an SMS External Template internally before it's submitted to DLT. This page covers what's specific to SMS external templates. For how approvals work in general, see [Approval Workflow](../../approval-request).

## How it works

1. You create or edit a template and submit it for approval. Its status changes to **Pending Approval**.
2. The request goes to the approvers you select.
3. Each approver approves or rejects the request.
4. When the minimum number of approvals is reached, the template is marked **Approved** and submitted to DLT, either automatically or manually.

| ------------------------------------------- | ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- |
| **Only drafts can be submitted** | Only templates in **Draft** status can be edited and submitted for approval. Approved templates can't be changed. |
| **Approval comes before DLT** | Once approvals are on, every template must be approved before it can be sent to DLT. |
| **Sending to DLT** | The template can be sent to DLT automatically on approval, by an approver, or later by the requester. See [Sending the template to DLT](#sending-the-template-to-dlt). |

## Create an approval request

#### Click Send to Provider

Open the template and click **Send to Provider**. The request creation pop-up opens.

#### Select approvers

In **Select Approvers**, choose one or more approvers. You need at least the minimum number of approvals set for your workspace.

#### Add a message (optional)

Add context for the approvers. Approvers see it while they review, and it's kept as a record of the decision.

#### Choose how to send to DLT

Select **Send to Provider on Approval** to submit the template to DLT automatically once it's approved. Leave it cleared to submit it manually later.

#### Click Request

The template moves to **Pending Approval**, and a banner shows the status of the request.

## Sending the template to DLT

#### Send to Provider on Approval selected

The template is submitted to DLT automatically as soon as it gets the minimum number of approvals. This suits teams that handle a high volume of templates.

#### Send to Provider on Approval cleared

The template must be submitted manually, either by an approver while approving it, or by the requester after it's approved. This suits teams that need extra checks after approval, or more control over when templates are submitted.

## Review a request

Approvers review requests independently. A request is approved only once it has the minimum number of approvals.

#### Approve

1. Open the template with the pending request.
2. Click **Approve**.
3. Add a message (optional).
4. To send the template to DLT now, select **Send to Provider on Approval**.
5. Click **Approve** or **Approve and Send**.

Your approval is recorded. If the request now has enough approvals, it's complete, and the template is sent to DLT based on its submission setting.

#### Reject

1. Open the template with the pending request.
2. Click **Reject**.
3. Enter a reason for the rejection. A reason is required.
4. Click **Reject**.

The request is marked **Rejected**. Update the template before you submit it for approval again.

#### Cancel

The requester can cancel a request at any time before it's complete. This removes the request so you can make more edits.

All approval messages and decisions are recorded, so you have a full audit trail of who approved or rejected each template, and why.
