Save as Draft vs Send for Approval

When creating a template, you can either save it as a draft or submit it to Meta for review.
These two actions define the template lifecycle.

Save as Draft

Saving as Draft keeps the template only inside Fyno. The template is not shared with Meta for review.

What happens

  • The template is stored in your workspace.
  • You can edit it anytime.
  • You can add languages later.
  • It does not appear while creating a Fyno WhatsApp template and cannot be used in notifications until it’s approved.
  • Saved in Fyno but not submitted to Meta for review.

When to use

Use Draft while:

  • Content is incomplete.
  • Variables or links are not finalized.
  • Waiting for marketing or legal approval.
  • Preparing multiple language versions.

Drafts are safe working versions — nothing is sent externally.

Send for Approval

Send for Approval submits the template to Meta for policy review. Each selected language is reviewed separately.

What happens

  • Meta reviews the template for policy compliance.
  • You cannot edit the template while it is under review.
  • After the review is completed (approved or rejected), the template status is updated in Fyno and reflected in the Synced tab.
  • If approved, the template becomes usable and can be mapped to Notification Events.
  • If rejected, it appears with the rejected status in Synced, where you can review the reason, edit the template, and resubmit it for approval.

Language selection during submission

When sending for approval:

  • Checked languages → submitted to Meta for review
  • Unchecked languages → remain saved as Draft

This lets you publish approved languages immediately while continuing to edit others before submitting them later.

WhatsApp Template statuses

StatusDescription
PendingSubmitted and awaiting provider review. The process can take up to 24 hours.

During this time:
- The template cannot be edited.
- Fields appear greyed out (read-only).
- The template cannot be used for sending messages.
ApprovedApproved by Meta and ready to send messages.
RejectedThe template was rejected during the review process. It can be edited and resubmitted for approval.
PausedPaused by Meta due to repeated negative user feedback (blocks or spam reports). Messages using this template cannot be sent.
SuspendedThe template was blocked due to policy or quality concerns. You can appeal the decision through Meta for further review.
DisabledDisabled by Meta due to repeated negative feedback or policy violations. Messages using this template cannot be sent.

For more detail, check the message_template_status_update webhook reference.

Updating a template

IMPORTANT NOTE: Meta treats template updates as a new review request. We recommend creating a new template instead of updating, as Meta approvals for updates take longer. Notifications using this template may fail if there’s live traffic during the approval process.

Draft Tab

Templates saved in Fyno but not yet submitted to Meta appear under the Draft tab.

  • Draft templates remain editable.
  • They cannot be used to send messages until they are submitted and approved by Meta.

Modifying an existing WhatsApp template

When you try to modify an existing WhatsApp template, Fyno shows a notice with two options: Edit here or Duplicate and exit.

Choose Duplicate and exit if the template is already being used in live messaging.

What happens

  • A pop-up appears to create a copy of the template.
  • You give the copy a new name.
  • You select the destination WABA.
  • The original template continues working without interruption.
  • The new template is created and saved as a draft.
  • You can also choose to Duplicate all languages to copy every language variant.

Use this when

  • The template is used in active campaigns.
  • You want zero message disruption.
  • You are making major changes (content, variables, buttons).

Example scenario Promotion update:
Old template: “Get 10% off this weekend”
New template: “Get 20% off this weekend + free shipping”

Edit here (create a draft version)

Choose Edit here if you want to update the same template.

What happens

  • A new draft version of the template opens.
  • The current approved template keeps working until you submit the changes for approval.
  • Your changes are submitted for approval once you save and send it.

Use this when

  • You are fixing small content issues.
  • The template is not actively used in campaigns.

If the template is already being used in live traffic, message delivery may fail or be paused during the review period.

Examples

  • Fixing a typo
Hi {{1}}, your order is shipped → Hi {{1}}, your order is shipped.
  • Changing punctuation or wording slightly
Your package arrives today → Your package will arrive today.
  • Updating support email address

Draft behavior during updates

If you choose to update it, Fyno creates a Draft version. The Draft is an editable working copy that is not yet approved.

You enter Draft mode when:

  • Creating a brand-new template
  • Clicking Edit on an approved template
  • Adding a new language to an existing template
  • Fixing a rejected template
  • Duplicating a template to create a new version

NOTE: These changes do not affect the live traffic.

When you save the updated template, a Draft icon appears next to the template status, alongside the synced version. Once submitted, editing the template does not replace the live version immediately. Instead, it creates a new Draft version that you can work on and must be reviewed and approved by Meta once it’s ready.

When the updated template gets approved

The template must be refreshed in the Fyno WhatsApp Template. Until the template status is refreshed and the latest version is approved, active flows may continue to reference the previously approved version. Failure to refresh the template in a timely manner may affect live traffic and message delivery behavior.
